Some social science researchers do not differentiate between the output and outcome, while output is the instant product of an act as outcome is the effect of an act over the time. An example can better elaborate this.
A program is launched with the intention to secure food security through wheat support price. Wheat support price is raised from 650 per 40kg to 950 per 40kg as support price. Here output is the increase in the production in very next crop or more cultivation of wheat in next season due to attractive price and outcome will be the excess wheat assuring food safety.
As per ur discussion can i say that the output is visible and the outcome is invisible..?
ReplyDeleteU can say but it can not apply at any conditions like one machine has made for making 100 units of shirts but after u may know this particular machine has not capability of making 100 units within specific time or cost.
Deleteoutcome is the actual number that has been increased after you launch any programme. it does not tell you anything about the effectiveness of programme. on the other hand output is the actual impact you can observe and see on ground. these observable changes are on the base of knowledge and skill, behavior and values..
ReplyDeleteI would like add in here that in some programs especially those related to health output and outcome prove to be same. Like in HIV related program output will be the decreased number of infected person and outcome will also be the same i-e an observable decrease in the number of HIV infected person’s. Correct me if I am wrong!
ReplyDeleteOutput and outcome are both visible and be quantified.
ReplyDeleteoutput and outcome are different in different programs though the purpose is same i.e. to assess how successful the program is? In some social interventions there is no difference in output and outcome but in some programs these are entirely different. In other programs it could be due to externalities.
ReplyDeleteWhat is Outcome or Output?
ReplyDeleteSuppose that you are a Policy Analyst working some executive level post in Pakistan let us say in Balochistan.
One of your client come to you and ask you to develop a policy regarding improvement of education in one of the remote district. The output which you will give would be the establishment of school on massive scale in that area with many teachers. Whereas, the outcome will be the educated society. In short, output is your deliverable, it can be quantify, seen, felt or moved about. Outcome is your performance and achievement.
Establishment of School. Student begin to get enrolled.(Outputs)
Educated Society. (Outcome)
@ Respected Fellow Waqas,
ReplyDeleteYou have said that in health programs output and outcome are same. Brother, being Policy Analyst we can not say. If we went on the details behind the program, their problems, objective, goals then you might be able to distinguish between output and outcome.
What you have said in your comment is the same problem that majority of people say about output and outcome.
outputs are the units of service regarding your program, for example, the number of people taught, counseled, sheltered, fed, clothed, etc.
ReplyDeleteAnd outcomes are actual impacts/benefits/changes for participants during or after your program
its not important to quantify ever out put and outcomes.
ReplyDeleteOutput is pops out of the end of the process or process delivers output.
ReplyDeleteOutcome is the result from the course of an action taken by an individual.basically it examines the immediate behavioral effects on program
An output involves a process as in production. It could be in the form of a good or service. On the other hand, an outcome is the result or payoff from the the course of action taken by an individual or player based on his decisions.
