Program!

During office hours discussion a student raised very interesting thing. Now, I am asking from Program Evaluation students.

What is Program ? How we can define it ?
Why we need Program ?
What will be the result of the program ?

Responses from students taking program evaluation course are required.

  1. a program is a combination of planned activities for the accomplishment of desired goals.
we need a program to achieve specified goals.
the result of a program is the attainment of the required purpose and goal for which the program is launched. e.g implementation of something or development of something new etc.

  2. As I discuss in the class, when we have different policy options/ alternatives for a specific public problem to resolve that specific public problem, than we choose one of the best policy alternative to solve the problem. When we implement that best policy alternative, than it is called a PROGRAM.
A prgram has some specify goals and objectives and has certain assumption before program start.

  3. For some reason, all this sounds too generic to me. Programs differ from projects in the sense that they are on going and focus on outcomes rather outputs like projects.

  4. Program is a set of activities to achieve a certain goal.We need program because without program we cannot do research or solve any kind of problem. The result of program comes in the shape of outcome and impact.

  5. Dear Taimur:

I must say that Siddique is very right! What if at the end of policy analysis, instead of designing alternatives. Government may abandon the program ? For Example, Obama Administration had roll back the war in the Iraq after analysis! which means abandoning the program.

Both, Siddique and Taimur do write what I have asked in the thread.

  7. Sir,
Than a Program, we can define as, a decision either it is a decision about public problem or strategic decision like to invade in Iraq having knowledge about the consequences.

Than the 2nd question why we need a program?

For example, we have a program like poverty reduction and economic growth program. The question is that either there is need for such program or not.

For the sake of this need we will conduct the research in a specific area, like diagnostic dialogs. By doing diagnostic dialogs will find out the reasult.

And if the program successfully launch, than the results and impacts obviously positive.

  9. Program is an intervention by Public or Private bodies to resolve any public problem …. Program is consist of some allied activities which carried out with some resources to gain some predetermine outcomes
We need a program to bring anticipated change in society.
 The result of a program may be or may not be the intended outcomes….
 The outcomes depend upon the program design, assumptions and so many environmental factors as well… but for a successful program the result is mostly in form of desirable outcomes or anticipated change.
