PROBLEM STATEMENT:
" The rate of deforestation in Pakistan is 40000 hectares per year which is very high and alarming"
OVERVIEW:
Deforestation is one of the most significant global environmental problem. Total area of Pakistan is about79.6 million hectares and total forested area area is 4.224 millions hectars which is 4.8 % of the total land. Forest are largely concentrated in the north west frontier province(NWFP), approx 40% of the total forested area. The rest is shared more or less equally by other provinces. Balochistan 14 %, Punjab 14.4 %, Sindh 9.4 %, Northen Area 15.7 % , AJK 6.5 %. This estimate is taken from the Foresty sector master plan (FSMP).
WHY THIS IS PROBLEM:
Lake of administration, lake of political will on the part of state actores, lake of a sense of ownership of forest by the local communities and the presence of powerful timber smugglers and illegal logging.
Dear Taimur,
ReplyDeleteThe problem which you are going to highlight is in your policy analysis project is one of serious problem in our country, as u said that the area covered by forest is only 4.8% of total area of our country, on the other hand side according to agricultural experts at least 25% area of a country should be cover under forest.
But what I think you have to quantify the percentage of deforestation in Pakistan, what is the ideal rate of deforestation, if there is huge difference between both then you can say the situation is alarming. You have said deforestation is very high, what I think It is important to mention, how much it is high.

ReplyDeleteWell... Hisam you are right!!!
ReplyDeleteI am expecting from all students to upload their work as well. Earlier, I formed groups to comment on others work, if you guys remember? Do inform your classfellow to upload as well as comment.
Ok sir, I think most of the students are busy with there Meds, after getting rid off they surely participate, sir thanks for providing this facility for sharing information and knowledge.
ReplyDeletedear Hisam..
ReplyDeleteyou are asking that i have to quantify the problem in percentage. so the answer to your query is that if i quantfy this problem it will be the interval estimate .2% to .5%. this estimate seems not worthy in its statement. thats why i quantify it in thousand of hectars which seems worthy. and the second is how it is alarming and high. It is alarming and high because if this rate of deforestation will be sustain than these forest will finish in coming 2 to 3 decades. thats why it is alarming. and you are also asking what is the ideal rate of deforestation? so i m working over it and i will give you the proper estimate in coming days. so do comint for further queries in your mind for better understanding the problem.. thanks..
Dear taimur,
ReplyDeleteI want to ask that can you tell me the deforestation rate in percentage in the form of decades from Independence till now. Also let me know that how it would affect in next 5-15 years if the same or increased rate of deforestation continue...
Thanx...
I think it is advisable to use a range in your estimate. Perhaps, 400,000-420,000?
ReplyDeleteI hope this information will be beneficial :
ReplyDelete2.5% —or about 1,902,000 hectares—of Pakistan is forested.
Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Pakistan lost an average of 41,100 hectares of forest per year.
This amounts to an average annual deforestation rate of 1.63%.
Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change increased by 24.4% to 2.02% per annum.
In total, between 1990 and 2005, Pakistan lost 24.7% of its forest cover, or around 625,000 hectares. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Pakistan lost 14.7% of its forest and woodland habitat.
Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Pakistan has some 1027 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 3.5% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 5.5% are threatened. Pakistan is home to at least 4950 species of vascular plants, of which 7.5% are endemic. 4.0% of Pakistan is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Stockholm is the capital city of Sweden is declared the most Green city of the year 2010 o world. Its a great achievement for Sweden and students undergoing the projects of Deforestation should study their policy.
ReplyDeleteBefore studying the policy of developed world, you have to understand the local people's problems. There is, of course, a significant difference between a developed and developing country. There is no availability alternative resource for the impoverished ones living here. Deforestation is one such issue. People here need wood for cooking, to be warm in the winter etc... therefore, deforestation is linked with other variables too, the most important is growing population.
ReplyDeleteDeforestation rate in Pakistan, estimated at 0.2 per cent to 0.5 per cent annually, is the highest in the world, which accounts for a 4-6 per cent decline in its wood biomass per annum. The total natural forest cover has reduced from 3.59 million hectares to 3.32 million hectares at an average rate of 27,000 hectares annually.

ReplyDeleteIf the rate of deforestation is in between 0.2 to 0.5% it is nothing, more than 15% of forest is in Northern areas of Pakistan where there is no gas, kerosene oil is more than Rs 100 per litter, how can they fulfill their fuel needs first and and second, there are thousands of uses of wood as well, then what is the ideal rate of deforestation that will not affect the environment as I have asked you people before.
ReplyDelete@usman, you haven't discuss the time period that how much time it took in reducing forest from 3.96 million hectares to 3.32 million hectares.
ReplyDeletegood work
ReplyDeleteaslam o alikum! i am student of economics. i am working on my thesis about pakistan deforstation rate. unfortunatly i can not get data of deforestation from 1971 to 2009. plz help me if any one have any information. my email id jave739@gmail.com kindly send information on my website.
