What we can do for Flood Victims ?

Hello

As you all know about the flood devastation. Almost 20 Million Pakistanis are suffering and need food, water, medicines and shelter. Where 0.8 Million are reachable only with helicopters. This is the toughest time for us and our nation.
How you guys are contributing for these victimized countrymen ? Have you launched some support for these effected people ?
What should be the response from the government ? What is lacking from government ? No one can comment on later two question without going into the areas by himself. May be a journalistic or discussion from the media make your perception. But What is reality we don't know! Any body amongst us has first hand information that what is going on ? Can anyone suggest what should be the way forward ?

  1. A lot of people are volunteering, collecting donations, and distributing aid in the affected areas. Two such organizations from Islamabad are Pakistan Youth Alliance and the Future Leaders of Pakistan. The damage is colossal. Rehabilitation and re-construction will take years.

    Upon talking to people who have been affected in the North of the country, government support has been minimal, whereas army did come to the rescue. Currently, what is required more than clothing is food and medicine. One of my articles published in The Frontier Post and Dawn Blog, on the first hand experience in Swat sheds more light into the catastrophe, and can be read here;

  2. Your contributions both -- your visit to swat and an article is really commendable. As you mentioned that the damage is colossal, on the other hand government machinery is incapacitated. What do you suggest to your NDU folks ? How they can support ?

  3. Currently, South Punjab is in dire need, so most of the efforts should be focused there. Primarily, what anyone can do is donate, collect, and/ volunteer in the distribution of aid. Water purification tablets, wheat, milk, and medicines for water-borne diseases are urgently required.

    Recently, Imran Khan initiated "Khudi" which is a wing of "Pukaar" a youth volunteer program in collaboration with Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman Foundation. Anyone who really wants to help can register as a volunteer there. People can register here: http://www.aag.tv/khudi/
    Efforts of PYA and FLP are commendable, and if anyone wants to volunteer with them, that will be good too.

    The time is to act by moving out of our cozy homes, and helping the nation that is in need.

  4. I hope all of us in our personal capacity are contributing here and there for these needy people. The volunteering with better organized program is an excellent idea! I think we should communicate with all NDU students, if they want to join them ?
