Please comment what is the different between prevalence and and rate ?

I need your comments.

  1. Rate

    Without linking the definition of rate with any of the internet source, I will define "rate" by my own as;

Rate is the description of some thing at a particular instant of time. Rate is used for measurement of change. Rate stands for measurement of value of any thing in a particular state taking in view all the relevant causal variables.

For Example: While dealing with speed or velocity of vehicle we often say what is the rate of change of speed of Suzuki with respect to Toyota in an hour.

  2. Prevalence

Prevalence means the prevalent values, figures or data.

Where Prevalent means, the widespread of something in a particular time. Or what is predominant in a instant time.

Mostly Prevalence Rate is used in case of diseases as some of the fellows are working on Hepatitis Control Program. They could be asked what is the Prevalence Rate of patients of Hepatitis in Islamabad.

Suppose if the sample population for studying Islamabad, is for instance say 8000 and patients are 824, then the prevalence rate would be

    824 divided by 8000 = 0.103% Prevalence Rate

  3. Prevalence:
It is the ratio (for a given time period) of the number of occurrences of a disease or event to the number of units at risk in the population.

    Rate:
It is a magnitude or frequency, relative to a time unit.
Example: the rate of change was faster than expected.

Some times we use it for ranking or rating.
Example: the bank is rated highly in giving credit to the company.

Some times we use it to quantify or amount considered as a proportion of another amount or quantity.
Example: literacy rate, dropout rate, mortality rate etc.

  4. prevalence rate is a common term used in medical field as:
prevalence rate is the measure of the number of patients who have the disease at a particular time, divided by the population at risk of having the disease at that time.

    so it can be used.

  5. Prevalence, derived from a word prevail,is a term commonly used to refer the spread or existence of some diseases in a society or locality.
Rate is a term commonly used to determine, measure or quantify the ratio, speed with witch that particular happening or occurrence, prevails.
The above two terms can be used together as prevalence rate, literacy rate and success rate etc.
So prevalence rate is the ratio or frequency with witch some particular diseases is spreading or prevailing in a particular area in a particular time .For instance the prevalence rate of HIV and AIDS in KPK during 2010 remained high and in other provinces almost negligible, means the no of patients in KPK was much greater then the no in other provinces from JAN to DEC 2010.

  6. Prevalence and incidence are both terms that are commonly used to refer to measurements of disease frequency.
In epidemiology, the prevalence of a disease in a statistical population is defined as the total number of cases of the disease in the population at a given time, or the total number of cases in the population, divided by the number of individuals in the population
Medicine: The total number of cases of a disease in a given population at a specific time.

  7. Rate
A value describing one quantity in terms of another quantity. A common type of rate is a quantity expressed in terms of time, such as percent change per year.
A magnitude or frequency relative to a time unit.
or we can say A quantity or amount or measure considered as a proportion of another quantity or amount or measure; "the literacy rate"; "the retention rate"; "the dropout rate

  8. Sir Mohazzam, will you Pl further elaborate and make it conceivable your own comment,
SO WE CAN NOT USE PREVALENCE RATE . dated March,11,2011
